Best Practice for Building Categories

Postby gastroll » Sun Feb 27, 2011 11:33 pm

Hi guys,

To save lot of time & work and to not realizing at the end
"Ou No, I should have build all the categories in a total other order or way" or
"If I would have done my category order this way my search engine results would be so much better" etc.
I want to ask the following question:

At the time I am building a directory for German restaurants, hotels, pubs, clubs (all kind of businesses inside the gastronomy)

So what do you advice is the best way to build up the categories?
1. First the geographical categories:
e.g.
country-->state--> city-->restaurant
country-->state--> city-->hotel
country-->state--> city-->pub
.
.
.

or

2. First the category of business
restaurant-->country-->state--> city1
restaurant-->country-->state--> city2
restaurant-->country-->state--> city3

I personally would prefer the fist option.
Think it would make it more clearer for search.
But a big CONTRA is that you have to build up lots and lots of categories
right from the beginning (many cities in germany :shock: )

That brings me to another Question:
Is it possible to build in a later stadium a new categories e.g. country, state, city
and put already existing categories (with their links) e.g. restaurant, hotels, pubs into them?

hey effi,
so I be afraid there is no option of later putting categories into new categories.

An onther interesting question is:

Is it possible to show on the starting page not the main category but rather only the sub categories?
