new install

Having a few problems..
I installed as suggested.
The site comes up fine, but none of the links work.
When I try to access the admin panel, I get a server error 500

Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

any idea what this might be?

just about ready to give up, not sure about what is the problem..
I changed the name of the htaccess and now just get page not found, links on front of site do not work. Although the front page comes up but all like do not work.
I am unable to login to admin.


Should I need to change someting in this the htaccess?
This is not very clear and install information is VERY unclear.

Please help.
