index page keywords

Could somebody give a tip please... I use a main graphic on the index page which is rather large, leaving only limited space for text. The graphic is speed optimized hence does not require splitting the image up. But this leaves me with only 1 space for the ALT tag. After only uploading the page a few days ago, I see that so far only the index page has been indexed, ranking somewhere in the 10-20 marks on Yahoo for the keywords I want. Other listing before that use many more keywords in their inede pages.
